eBuddy is very slow, it takes ages to load and log in. What can I do to make it faster?

As from Sunday 30 November we are experiencing some problems with our connectivity. We are working hard to get things sorted out and make eBuddy fast again. In the meantime you can help us by letting our Customer Care Service know about your problem so we can trace down the problem faster. Why does eBuddy ask for my age and gender?

If we know your age and gender, we can provide you with a more personalized experience. eBuddy may also use it to show you more relevant advertisements. We will not share your personally identifiable information with third parties. Your information is stored securely in eBuddy’s databases only. If you have any questions concerning your privacy, contact our customer care department at feedback@ebuddy.com.

There is a new banner! Why?

eBuddy is a free service and we want to remain a free service. In order to cover our costs we show you advertisements. The advertisement markets are constanly changing and there is a higher demand for the new banner! This way we can both make cool new things for you and remain free! 

I'm looking for the old version! Where can I find it?

Starting 4 November 2008, old eBuddy versions are no longer available. These versions have not been maintained for a long time and did not meet the level of quality and performance we want to offer our users. Please use the latest version of eBuddy Web Messenger (full-featured) or eBuddy Lite Messenger (a light-weight client for use on PC or mobile). 

What is an eBuddy ID?

With eBuddy you can create your own eBuddy ID, a special account that will give you access to additional eBuddy features.

Advantages of an eBuddy ID:

• Easily sign in to multiple accounts
  The login information of your IM accounts will be stored with your eBuddy ID. When you sign in with your eBuddy ID,  all IM accounts associated with this eBuddy ID will login automatically. So, you do not have to type your username and password for each network anymore.
• Send custom emoticons
  Access to exclusive eBuddy custom emoticons. Send these special icons to your MSN buddies and surprise them with these cool icons.
• Store your settings
  Your settings are stored with your eBuddy ID, including screenname, personal message, display picture, font and font color. So, you don't need to set them everytime you login.
• Access premium features
  More premium features will be added to eBuddy and you can only experience these new functionalities with an eBuddy ID.
• Access eBuddy on your mobile phone
  An eBuddy ID is required to use eBuddy on your mobile phone. Click here for more info about eBuddy Mobile.

Sign up for a free eBuddyID! 

Go to the homepage, click on 'eBuddy Multi Network Web Messenger'  and click on 'Claiim your free eBuddy ID'. Follow instructions to create your very own eBuddy ID and link all your IM accounts to it.

Next time, make sure you choose 'eBuddy Multi Network Web Messenger'  on the homepage to login with your eBuddy ID.

Is eBuddy free?

Yes! eBuddy is free of charge.

If you use eBuddy on your mobile phone, you may be charged by your operator for using mobile Internet.

How can I login to eBuddy with multiple accounts?

With eBuddy you can be logged in with multiple IM accounts at the same time. Contacts from all accounts will appear in one single contact list.

1. When you are logged in with one account, click on the 'Add an Account'  button above the contact list  . (Or Click on the 'Settings' , click on the 'Accounts'  tab and click on the 'Add an Account'  button.)
2. Select the correct 'IM network', fill in your 'Username' and 'Password ' and click 'Add' to login to this account.
3. Click 'OK' to close the window and to go back to your contact list.

After a few seconds you will be logged into this account and the buddies will be displayed in your contact list.

Want easier login with multiple accounts? Create an eBuddyID!

You only have to link all your IM accounts to your eBuddyID once and then you can use this eBuddyID for easy login to multiple accounts. For more info, see the answer to 'What is an eBuddyID?"

How do I change my avatar / display picture?

1. Click your current avatar (this is the image on the top left of the screen).
2. Select the picture you want to use and click 'Open'.

After a few seconds your picture will be uploaded and it will be visible to all your buddies!

How do I add a contact to my contact list?

1. Click on the 'Add a Contact'  button.
2. Select the correct 'Account' and fill in the 'username ' of the contact you would like to add
3. In the 'Move Contact to'  dropdown menu, select the group to which the new contact should be added and press 'OK'

After a few seconds your new contact will appear in your contact list.

Does eBuddy have webcam?

No, you cannot use your webcam with eBuddy at the moment. 

How can I add eBuddy to my own website?

If you like to embed the eBuddy login box in your website, see here for instructions. We strongly advise you to use these scripts instead of creating one yourself.

We have multiple servers and these scripts will make sure that users are only signed in to the available servers. If you write your own script and hardcode the path to a certain server, users could be directed to servers that are disabled, overloaded or simply switched off.

Frequent Problems

I don't have an account to chat. Where do I create one?

Create an eBuddy ID to easily sign in with multiple accounts at the same time:

• Go to the homepage, click on 'eBuddy Multi Network Web Messenger' , click on 'Claiim your free eBuddy ID'. Follow instructions to create your very own eBuddy ID and link all your IM accounts to it.

To chat with your friends, you have to create an account for the same IM network that they are using:

• Create a new MSN / Windows Live Messenger account
• Create a new Yahoo! account
• Create a new AIM account
• Create a new Google Talk account
• Create a new ICQ account

Something is not working and I cannot find it in this list. Where do I get help?

There is an error in my language! 

When you see a mistake in spelling or grammar when using eBuddy in your own language, there are two things you can do:

• Send an email to translation@ebuddy.com and describe the problem (in English please...) 
• Become a translator and improve this language yourself! Go to www.translation.ebuddy.com and sign up as a translator (knowledge of English is required).

I cannot login! What is wrong?

1. Make sure you use the correct login box. Do not try to sign in to Yahoo! using the MSN login box, it will not work.

2. Check your username:

• eBuddyID: your username should be something like 'eBuddy01'. Do not use email addresses or nicknames.
• MSN / Windows Live messenger: your Passport should be your email address, like 'ebuddy@hotmail.com' or 'ebuddy23@live.com'. Do not use your nickname.
• Yahoo!: login with your Yahoo! username or Yahoo! email address, like 'ebuddyonyahoo' or 'ebuddy@yahoo.co.uk'. Do not use your nickname.
• AIM: login with your AIM screenname or AIM email address, like 'ebuddyaol' or 'ebuddyaol@aol.com'.
• ICQ: login with your ICQ number or emailaddress, like '123456' or 'ebuddy@icq.com'. Do not use your nickname.
• MySpace: login with your email address to MySpace IM. Do not use your MySpace nickname.

3. Check your password. If you forgot your password, please refer to the 'Forgot my password' question.

How can I add an account to my eBuddy ID?

1. When you are logged in with an eBuddy ID, click on the 'Add an Account'  button above the contact list .
   
2. Select the correct 'IM network', fill in your 'Username' and 'Password ' and click 'Add' to login to this account.
3. Click 'OK' to close the window and to go back to your contact list.

After a few seconds you will be logged into this account and the buddies will be displayed in your contact list. The login information of this account will be stored with your eBuddy ID. The next time you login with your eBuddy ID, you will be logged into this account automatically.

What is eBuddy?

eBuddy web messenger is a web based chat client, which connects you to all the major Instant Messaging networks. With eBuddy you can chat everywhere without installing an application on your computer. We support MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, AIM, Google Talk, MySpace IM and ICQ simultaneously.
 
With eBuddy you can be online with multiple accounts at the same time. Be online with multiple accounts from the same IM network (like multiple MSN accounts) or combine your accounts of different IM networks in one contact list. Create an eBuddy ID for easy sign in with multiple accounts.
 

Which chat networks does eBuddy support?

With eBuddy you can chat on MSN (Windows Live Messenger), Yahoo!, AIM, Google Talk, ICQ and MySpace IM. 

Which browsers does eBuddy support?

eBuddy works in the most common browsers.

We currently support:

• Safari 3.1
  

eBuddy may also work without problems in other browsers. If you experience problems, please use one of the browsers listed above.

Do I have to download and install anything on my computer to use eBuddy?

No! That's the best thing about eBuddy, you can use it on any computer without downloading or installing anything!

Does eBuddy have winks?

No, you cannot send or receive winks with eBuddy. 

Why is eBuddy not available in my language?

eBuddy tries to provide as many languages as possible and for the translation we rely on engaged users of eBuddy. If eBuddy is not available in your language (yet), then you can consider becoming an eBuddy translator. eBuddy translators translate eBuddy from English to their own language. See www.translation.ebuddy.com for more information!

Contact List

How do I sort my contact list?

Use the 'Sort by' menu above the contact list to sort your contacts in three ways:

1. Select 'Sort by groups' to sort your contact list by the groups you have defined.
2. Select 'Sort by name' to view all your contacts as an alphabetically sorted list.
3. Select 'Sort by network' to have your contacts grouped per IM account

Note: you can use the option 'Hide offline contacts'  if you do not want contacts that are offline to appear in the list. Use the option 'Show offline contacts' to show all your contacts in the list, both online and offline.

Someone is bugging me! How do I block a contact?

Blocking people in your contact list will prevent them from sending messages to you.

1. Go over the screen name of this contact in your contact list
2. Right-click and select 'Block'  to block this contact

When you change your mind and want to receive messages again:

1. Go over the screen name of this contact in your contact list
2. Right-click and select 'Unblock'  to unblock this contact

Chats

Does eBuddy have chat rooms?

No, eBuddy does not have chat rooms. You can only chat with your buddies on the IM networks. We do support group chats with contacts that are in your own of your buddy's contact list.

How can I send custom emoticons?

Only when you have an eBuddy ID, you have the ability to send any of the available custom emoticons to your friends.

1. In the chat screen, click on the smiley icon to see a list of all available emoticons
   
2. Click on an emoticon to insert it in the message typing field and click 'Send'

How can I change the font and text color of my messages?

In the chat screen, use the 'font settings' bar (at the bottom left of the screen) to change your font settings and text color.
